The
Bone Collector (12/20/1999)
Denzel Washington plays a forensic detective
for the police department that suffered a mishap leaving him almost completely
paralyzed from the shoulders down. Angelina Jolie plays a beat cop more
interested in a desk job than the forensic work she has an eye for. The
pair reluctantly join forces to uncover the identity of a killer that leaves
hidden clues with which to get themselves caught. And of course, they do.
What's good about it? If you like edge-of-your-seat
thrillers about serial killers bent on their own self destruction, this
movie is for you. With gruesome, elaborately planned deaths and failed
rescues to push up the body count, not to mention creepy scenes invloving
investigating the corpses for clues, horror buffs have something to watch
as well. It's also for those of us who think Angelina Jolie is just plain
fun to watch... no matter what she's doing.
What's bad about it? For all the glitz,
effects, and hype, the story is wrought with script problems and missed
opportunities. Not the fault of the players, but there are holes large
enough to drive a hearse through in this one. And the end is pretty obvious,
as is guessing the killer from the too-short list of suspects.
The Bone Collector promises to be
a Se7en- style thriller: clever, creepy, and intense. Instead, we
get a glossy Se7en make-over that we've already seen before.. another
Hollywood attempt to run an original idea into the ground.
